A GOOD REASON TO GIVE MAGNESIUM TO FOALS

Up to 25% of foals suffer from Osteochondrosis – one of the most common developmental disorders seen in horses. The disease includes problems in the development of both bones and cartilage1.
The highest prevalence of the disease presents at 5 months of age; and it can continue throughout development, up to 12 months.
As osteochondrosis appears mostly due to damaged ossification, it is clear that different elements which are responsible for bone formation can have a role in the disease.
Magnesium has been found to significantly disease in cases of osteochondrosis.
Two main studies tested the effects of oral magnesium supplement on young foals, from birth to the age of 12 months. Results highlighted the role of magnesium in the disease, showing that prolonged magnesium intake during the first weeks of life decreases cases of osteochondrosis from 42% to 22% at week 5 of life, and at the peak of the disease2.
